Pheochromocytoma is a rar arising from chromaffin ceils of the sympatho-adrenal system
producing large amount of epinephrine and Nor-ephinephrine.
During the past 10 years, 5 cases of Pheochromocytoma were experienced at the National Medical
Center and a clinical study was made regarding its incidence, clinical manifestation, diagnostic
methods and operative result with a few literatural review.
1) Of the 5 cases, 2 cases were in 2nd decade and 3 cases were 3rd decade. 3 were male, and 2
were female.
2) All cases demonstrated persistent hypertension.
3) Regitine test and urinary VMA were all pathognomonic in tested cases.
4) IVP, Urography, Renal Angiography and Retroperitoneal air insufflation technic showed not
always objective findings but they were somewhat helpful in certain cases. For example a case
showed only positive finding in retroperitoneal air insufflation and no abnormal findings in other
X-ray technics.
5) All cases underwent operation resulted in 4 cases of good postoperative course up to date and
one operative table death which was demonstrated as the olny malignant phechromocytoma having
distant metastasis at autopsy findings.
